Works with a plain adapter

ARRI PL sits 35.00mm further from the sensor than Nikon 1. You need a 35.00mm adapter, but it can be a plain one — a hollow metal spacer with no glass in it. The lens still reaches infinity focus and nothing is added to the optical path.

Coverage & framing. The lens covers more than the sensor needs, so the body crops into the frame — roughly 2.7×. A 50mm frames like a 135mm would on Full frame.

ThinNeeds a thin adapterThe two mounts sit almost the same distance from the sensor, so any adapter has to be wafer-thin or flush. These exist for common pairings and often don't for rare ones.
OpticsOnly with corrective opticsA plain adapter cannot work — it would have to remove distance, which is impossible. Only an adapter with corrective glass inside will focus to infinity, and that costs sharpness and usually a stop of light.

What this does and doesn't tell you

  • It answers focus and framing: whether a plain adapter reaches infinity, and what the sensor does to your field of view.
  • A dot (•) in a cell means we list at least one adapter for that pairing; pick the cell to see them. Elsewhere it doesn't promise an adapter is made — rare combinations often have none.
  • Electronic contacts, autofocus and aperture control are separate questions. Most adapters for legacy glass are fully manual.
  • On SLR-to-SLR pairings, mirror clearance can stop a lens fitting even when the numbers work.
