Works with a plain adapter

Contax Rangefinder sits 18.85mm further from the sensor than Nikon Z. You need a 18.85mm adapter, but it can be a plain one — a hollow metal spacer with no glass in it. The lens still reaches infinity focus and nothing is added to the optical path.

Coverage & framing. Both are Full frame, so the lens covers the sensor fully.

ThinNeeds a thin adapterThe two mounts sit almost the same distance from the sensor, so any adapter has to be wafer-thin or flush. These exist for common pairings and often don't for rare ones.
OpticsOnly with corrective opticsA plain adapter cannot work — it would have to remove distance, which is impossible. Only an adapter with corrective glass inside will focus to infinity, and that costs sharpness and usually a stop of light.

What this does and doesn't tell you

  • It answers focus and framing: whether a plain adapter reaches infinity, and what the sensor does to your field of view.
  • It doesn't promise an adapter is actually manufactured for your pairing. Rare combinations often have none.
  • Electronic contacts, autofocus and aperture control are separate questions. Most adapters for legacy glass are fully manual.
  • On SLR-to-SLR pairings, mirror clearance can stop a lens fitting even when the numbers work.
