How to Choose

Start with the film format, because it decides both the print size and what every shot costs you for as long as you own the camera. Instax Mini is the smallest and cheapest — a credit-card-sized print (62 × 46mm image) at roughly 80p–£1 a shot. Instax Square gives a 62 × 62mm image, and Instax Wide doubles the Mini to 99 × 62mm, which suits groups and landscapes, for around 90p–£1.10 a shot. Polaroid i-Type and 600 film gives the classic large square print (79 × 79mm) with softer, dreamier colour, but costs around £2 a shot; Polaroid Go uses its own smaller film. The other big choice is analogue or hybrid. A traditional instant camera prints every frame you take, so misses cost money. Hybrid models such as the Instax Mini Evo, Mini LiPlay and Wide Evo shoot to a sensor and memory card first, let you review the image, and print only the frames you want — they can also print photos from your phone. If you are buying for a child or for parties, a simple Instax Mini with automatic exposure is the easy choice; if you want more control, look for exposure compensation, a close-up mode and a self-timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Instax and Polaroid?

They are separate systems and the film is not interchangeable. Fujifilm Instax comes in three sizes — Mini, Square and Wide — and is cheaper per shot, with punchy colour and fast development. Polaroid i-Type and 600 film produces a larger square print with a softer, more vintage look and takes longer to develop, at roughly twice the cost per shot. Polaroid Go cameras use their own smaller Go film.

How much does instant film cost per shot?

In the UK, Instax Mini works out at roughly 80p–£1 a shot when bought in 20-shot twin packs or larger, and Instax Square and Wide at around 90p–£1.10. Polaroid i-Type and 600 packs contain 8 shots each, so a print costs around £2. Multi-packs bring the per-shot cost down noticeably — see our instant film listings for current prices.

Are hybrid instant cameras worth it?

If you hate wasting film, yes. A hybrid instant camera like the Instax Mini Evo or Wide Evo captures a digital image first, so you can check focus and framing, add effects and print only the shots you like — and keep a digital copy of every frame. The trade-off is the price and some of the spontaneity: a fully analogue camera gives you one unrepeatable print per press, which is part of the appeal for many people.
