Flange distance & adapting

A plain adapter is a spacer: it can only add distance between lens and sensor. Glass from a mount with a longer flange distance adapts cleanly onto Canon EF-M; glass from a shorter one needs corrective optics.

How deep is the Canon EF-M lens range?

The lens-ecosystem scores Camera Match uses when it ranks Canon EF-M bodies for wildlife, sports, portrait, macro, food, architecture and astro. Scored 0–10 from the native lenses buyable new, with the reasoning shown.

Wildlife & sports reach
Native AF lenses reaching 400 mm equivalent or more
2/10

Only native telephoto still sold new is EF-M 55-200 (88-320 mm equiv) — nothing native reaches 400 mm equiv; EF telephotos need the EF-EOS M adapter (not counted). Source ↗

Portrait primes
Fast 75–135 mm equivalent primes at f/2 or brighter
5/10

Sigma 56 f/1.4 DC DN (90 equiv, f/1.4) is the one qualifying lens still made; Canon's EF-M 32 f/1.4 is 51 mm equiv, too short. Source ↗

Macro
True macro lenses, 1:2 or closer
6/10

EF-M 28 f/3.5 Macro IS STM (1.2×, still sold new by Canon UK), Laowa 65 f/2.8 2× and Laowa 100 f/2.8 2× in EF-M; short working distance on the 28. Source ↗

Architecture
Rectilinear ultra-wides and tilt-shift / shift lenses
4/10

EF-M 11-22 (17.6-35 equiv) misses the 16 mm line; Laowa 9 f/2.8 Zero-D (14.4 equiv, MF) and Samyang 12 f/2 (19) exist; no shift lens. Source ↗

Astro
Fast wides, 24 mm equivalent or wider at f/2.8 or brighter
5/10

Samyang 12 f/2 (19 equiv f/2, MF), Laowa 9 f/2.8 Zero-D (14 equiv f/2.8), Sigma 16 f/1.4 DC DN (25.6 equiv, just outside) — MF-only options but astro tolerates that. Source ↗
