How to Choose

Match the reader to your cards first: CFexpress Type A and Type B are different shapes, and a UHS-II SD card only reaches full speed in a UHS-II reader (in a UHS-I reader it falls back to around 100 MB/s). Then check the connection. A reader is only as fast as its link to the computer — USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) suits UHS-II and most CFexpress cards, while CFexpress 4.0 cards need a Gen 2×2 or USB4 port to get anywhere near their rated speed. Dual-slot readers save swapping cables if you carry two card types, and a metal body handles the heat of long transfers better than plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my card copying slower than its rated speed?

Usually the reader or port is the bottleneck: a UHS-II card in a UHS-I reader, or a CFexpress reader plugged into an older USB port, caps the speed. Also note that cards are rated by read speed, and large batches of small files transfer slower than one big video file.

Can I plug my camera in instead of using a reader?

Yes, but most cameras transfer over USB more slowly than a dedicated reader and drain the camera battery while they do it. A reader is faster and leaves the camera free.
