Teleconverters

A teleconverter fits between your lens and camera and multiplies the focal length — a 1.4× turns a 100–400mm into 140–560mm, a 2× makes it 200–800mm. Browse maker 1.4× and 2× teleconverters and extenders for every major mirrorless and DSLR system, with UK prices compared.

How to Choose

Teleconverters only fit specific lenses, so check your lens is on the maker's compatibility list before anything else — most are designed for telephoto primes and long zooms such as 70–200mm and 100–400mm lenses, and many physically will not mount on shorter lenses. Then pick the strength. A 1.4× costs one stop of light (an f/4 lens becomes f/5.6) and keeps image quality very close to the bare lens, while a 2× costs two stops (f/4 becomes f/8) and softens the image more noticeably. Autofocus also slows a little and some bodies lose focus points at the smallest apertures, so a 1.4× on a fast lens is the safest combination for wildlife and sport. Buy the converter made for your lens's mount and range — teleconverters are not interchangeable between systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a teleconverter better than cropping?

On a compatible high-quality lens, usually yes: a 1.4× teleconverter generally resolves more detail than cropping the same image by 1.4×. With a 2× the gap narrows, and on a high-resolution sensor cropping can be the better choice, especially in low light where the lost stops hurt.

Do teleconverters work on any lens?

No. Each teleconverter works only with the lenses its maker lists — mostly telephoto primes and long zooms. On many systems the converter's front element protrudes and will not physically fit a standard zoom or prime.
