Housings are made for one camera model, so start with the exact body you own — even the button layout differs between generations. Then match the depth rating to how you will use it: snorkelling and surf need only a few metres, while recreational diving needs 40 m or more. Check which controls the housing reaches, whether it takes the lens or port you want to use, and whether it has a leak alarm. Rugged compacts such as the OM System Tough TG-7 are waterproof on their own to 15 m; a housing takes them deeper and protects the body from knocks.
Do I need a housing for a waterproof camera?
Not for swimming or snorkelling — waterproof compacts and action cameras handle that on their own. A housing lets you go deeper than the camera's own rating, adds protection, and on some systems lets you fit wide-angle or macro wet lenses.
How do I avoid leaks?
Clean and lightly grease the main O-ring before each dive, check it for hair or sand, and test the sealed housing in a tank or sink before putting the camera in. A housing with a vacuum seal or leak alarm warns you before water reaches the camera.
