Size and brightness come first. A 5-inch monitor keeps a small rig light and balanced on a gimbal; 7 inches is easier to judge focus on but heavier. For outdoor work, look for at least 1,000 nits — dimmer screens wash out in daylight. Check the input matches your camera (most mirrorless bodies output over micro or full-size HDMI) and whether it passes 4K. Useful tools are focus peaking, zebras or false colour for exposure, waveform, and LUT preview if you shoot log. Some monitors can also control the camera, and most run from Sony NP-F batteries — budget for a pair.
Do I need a monitor if my camera has a flip screen?
For casual video, no. A monitor helps when you need to judge focus on a bigger screen, preview log footage with a LUT, check exposure with false colour, or let someone else see the shot — and its brighter screen is far easier to read outdoors.
What is the difference between a monitor and a monitor-recorder?
A monitor only displays the camera's signal. A monitor-recorder also records it to its own SSD, often in a higher-quality codec (such as ProRes RAW) than the camera can record internally.
